@unarmedduck Polish is only surface-level difficult. Once you get past pronounciations and letters, it is the same as the other Slavic languages. I think Hungarian, Georgian, and Basque are hardest

@noop9k Adopting their cultural legacy? What a ridiculous idea. By the standard you just set, none of Italy can claim to have any connection to the Roman Empire, only Rome itself can. You're forgetting that Novogorod, Vladimir (which later became Moscow) and Kiev were united for hundreds of years, so it's not like Moscow conquering other states to re-create Rus was unheard of. This happened even before the Mongols- knyazy fighting each other, only to be under the Veliky Knyaz, or Tsar. Lastly, they're both dialects of the same language. It's like saying America is stealing Boston's cultural legacy)) Boston is American, and Novgorod is Russian. Sorry!

@anti-emo4721 Not the Church language, the common language. Of course Church Slavonic was Bulgarian-influenced (but it also wasn't what most common Bulgarians spoke at the time), but we are talking about different languages here. A dialect of Old Russian is Old Novgorodian, lacks many modern (imported) features of the Russian language, but preserves many old East Slavic words and sounds.

@Idkidki I mean there was, for 10 years (mid 2000s-2010s). But it was mainly driven by high oil prices and an authoritarian government (which was not great, but anything was better than Eltsin.) It is a shame more focus was not placed on diversifying economy earlier, Russia would be in a much better position now.
