  1. I question whether that would actually be a self-fulfilling prophecy. What indication that NATO membership would ever stop expanding even if Russia did nothing? There was a refusal to ever "close the door" (close applications for new members) so what, realistically, did Russia lose (with respect to nato) by doing this? Seems like it would have kept going no matter what

  2. "Old Russia" wasn't sustainable. Basically Russia post-1991 was never meant to be. Sell out all your assets to Western firms or Russian oligarchs (who end up laundering the money to Basel or London anyway), and you get this mess. The facade of growth while relying on Western institutions and tech companies to run the rest of your economy has finally been lifted. If the US actually had good intentions instead of sending the "shock therapists" to "help" Russia onto its feet in a capitalist world, none of this would have even happened. Sure they might not have an ally in the form of Ukraine, but the region would be more politically stable.
