Sorry but this is why I never condemned Assad. He was quite literally Syria's best option. If you preface everything by saying "he's bad" you give his opposition space to claim they have good reasons to overthrow him. We all know what happens post-Assad...Libya 2.0

@KernowDamo I suppose so, but I see no point in pointing that out when the intended goal is to bolster support for him to stay in power (to avoid another Libya situation). It seems similar to denouncing Hamas, done for optics and credibility in the neoliberal lens— but, notably, not for achieving any practical political solution. If we're going to purity test everyone, then I expect everyone to precede any statement about Egypt, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, or Eritrea with a full-throated endorsement of collapsing their governments, too. Instability and the resulting suffering be damned, they're bad guys who've gotta go! That's all that matters! It's a ridiculous, tunnel-vision view of politics and I don't understand why it gets trotted out against anti-Western states only.

How stupid and short sighted are these "rebels"? They're gonna have two fight a 2 front war if they want to actually administer Syria. And if they don't? Especially if they make a deal with Izrael— they'll lost legitimacy, and be overthrown by another group. Syria went from a tenuous stability, though gasp! Russian-aligned, to a complete lawless hellscape. Just like the US always wanted.

Wow. If that doesn't paint a clear picture of how Israeli views the US, I don't know what does. They think that we're their faithful servants. When they fully depend on us. A nation of spoiled brats. How sad.

@videre8884 Are you paid by the State Department to stalk these videos, or are you just slow? Even the BBC has done interviews with Libyans about their changed opinion— most want Gaddafi back, it beats being in a civil war. Same as Iraq; now they're occupied by the US. And Syria will be much worse off, since they'll lose their land to both Izrael and Turkey.

@videre8884 Because they can't get rid of the new dictators. There isn't a utopian solution for these countries until they build themselves enough to expel Western influence. Before then, there can be no true democracy. Assad was Syria's best hope for this. If you really think Syrians will be able to kick out both Iz and Turkey, then you're truly naive and you have earned your fate.

@briantitchener4829 I mean they literally had an operation titled Timber Sycamore, devoting a huge portion of their budget over the last decade to overthrowing Assad. Not a stretch to imagine that more declassified documents will emerge detailing which NGOs in Syria they pumped money into.
