  3. ​ @balticpagan1495  Because the West had hundreds of years of time to funnel wealth from overseas colonies and use slave labor. The interior European countries weren't able to cash in on that trade, and even Russia who had serfs (basically slaves) needed to build out infrastructure to keep their empire together. The Western countries' empires had a huge advantage in technology over the Africans and Asians and oceans to keep rebellions away. Basically imagine Russia's strategy was to just build up Moscow and the surrounding areas, and let the entire rest of the country go to shit. No railroads, no new settlements, just extracts wealth from them and put it all into one little region. That's what Western countries did.

  5. Not quite. Kaiser is missing some points about Israel. The discrepancy between Ashkenazi birthrates (European descended- lower) and Mizrahi Jews (Middle Eastern Jews- higher). And most importantly, the Orthodox Jews living mostly in the West Bank. They are largely responsible for the high native birth rate. Their religion is most similar to fundamentalist Islam, and the women are repressed and coerced into having large families. The government basically pays them to pray all day. Israel is banking on being able to eventually reap the rewards of this trend by assimilating them back into mainstream Israeli society (there was some uproar about proposed conscription of them into Gaza). But for now they are a drain on Israeli budget, although it is a good strategy for demographic stability— but this assumes that they can be integrated, and that doing so won't ruin the Orthodox miracle they have built.
