I think a compromise must be reached. Russia (despite its aggressive behavior) does have genuine reasons for concern regarding the expansion of NATO, but Ukraine's sovereignty must be respected, too. Given the Americans' previous promise that NATO would not expand past Germany in exchange for re-unification, some rollback (at the very least, of American ground forces access) must be done to assure Russia that a superpower is not trying to contain it again. I think Ukraine could either join NATO with this above stipulation legally enshrined (not like last time, "not one inch eastwards"), or be neutral, but allowed to enter economic deals with both Russia and Europe, and buy military equipment from either side.

@lejenddairy Just a point of contention, "more enticed to dethrone us" doesn't sound like a very good reason to hold onto power. I don't think Europeans (at least the ones I know- both Western and Eastern) mind the U.S. security guarantee so much as they hate the "freedom, democracy" posturing. If you want to stay the world's superpower because of money and power, just say so. But don't pretend to be a martyr doing it because other nations "just don't do government as well as we do, we need to teach them" type shit.

@duphasdan True, but military spending =/= efficiency. Hundreds of millions wasted so divisions can maintain their budget quota. A desert full of unusable Abrams in Nevada, is not what I call money well spent

This is true, but (at least for memes) it's hard to come up with a 'theme' or stereotypical set of ideas for a smaller country. What is poland known for, besides serious WWII history? And maybe Chopin, for music theory students? There is yet to be a Polish stereotype that breaks into American culture, like gopniks or hardbass or (ironically a polish invention) vodka. Same with Serbia, although wartime music is becoming a meme, and the fight with Albania is also kind of a meme. Same with Croatian, mostly known as a vacation spot. A country, to be a meme (at least in USA), needs a "brand image". Anyone can give a russian accent because it has very distinct features. Soft consonants, emphasis on wrong syllables, "je" instead of e, v instead of w, etc. It is harder to create a polish accent, or hungarian, or bulgarian, etc

@Scopesdoped NATO has twice now attacked countries unprovoked- in Afghanistan (taking control of the ISAF and carrying out airstrikes) and in Libya (just after the West convinced Libya they wouldn't do anything if he gave up his nuclear arsenal). NATO doesn't attack Russia because it can't-- not because it doesn't want to. They could come in under false pretenses, like in Iraq. Is this really hard for you to believe? All of these things have happened before. Yet your attitude is "trust me bro"

This is a perfect reason why Russia is still suspicious of them. They will bomb any place they can get away with it. Also no, Osama Bin Laden was Saudi, not Afghan, and he was hiding in Pakistan, not Afghanistan. That's where the Taliban was being trained, too.
