Georgia, on both occasions but especially with Abkhazia, was committing human rights violations against its own minority population. They didn't have to shell Sukhumi with mortars, or have Commander Karakashvili declare that they would retaliate for attacks on Georgians in Abkhazia by wiping the Abkhazian nation from the face of the earth. They didn't have to react to a hostage situation in Sukhumi State University by sending troops to attack the entire city. But they did all of those things. And the Abkhazian local government asked Russia to intervene as a result. Isn't that something you support? When the US intervenes in Libya to stop Gaddafi from 'being a tyrant,' you guys soyface until your lips fall off. So why don't you do the same here? And just to be clear-- Russia invaded not two weeks after Georgia and Ukraine were announced to be future members of NATO. Not before. Essentially the situation is like this: the US refuses to close NATO's open door policy, because it cites Russia's actions. But Russia really only does those things, to secure itself against pre-emptive US actions. In the US' mind, Russia needs to "prove itself" a trustworthy neighbor-- but for who? The US won't ever willingly dissolve NATO, so what does Russia have to gain by allowing yearly mock invasions to be conducted on its border??

This wasn't a case of you repeatedly trying to convince me and me sticking my fingers in my ears. You just spouted off a surface-level understanding of a pro-Western talking point, and when the actual dates, numbers and events go against your worldview, you ignored them and left. At least admit that to yourself, if not me.

@wowomah6194 You didn't say it another way, you said a completely different thing. NATO hosts multiple Slavic countries, and it is a political alliance if not an outright union (I see little distinction in distinct militaries if they all cooperate anyway). Like you said, the primary subject of interest here is Russia. If you have an alliance explicitly formed to antagonize Russia, you cannot expect it to act as a political ally. You cannot just place them behind your border, you must integrate them into your political framework, or risk having tensions and wars forever. How much longer will Europe and the US keep stoking tensions? How many more wargames on Russia's border, while claiming that our anger is unreasonable? Lastly- stop lying. The idea of a unified Europe has roots in Charles de Gaulle's 'Europe, from the Atlantic to the Urals' and Gorbachev's 'Common European Home' proposal in 1990.

@vavovidnica Better than Orthodoxy? There's a reason Orthodox priests are allowed to marry, while Catholics indulge in... other behaviors. Don't try and tell me which religion is better. A Lutheran could maybe try, but certainly not a Catholic.

@ivepesusic8792 No I agree, Croatia does have it's own identity, I'm just saying that the thread thinks the opposite (or at least it sounded kind of like it)

@Harahvaiti Obviously-- Russia's architecture is almost exclusively Byzantine (until the USSR, then entirely new styles were invented). Croatia is the same, along with most of Europe. But some places have more distinct, or "indigenous", styles than others. Chinese military outposts are what inspired Japanese pagodas. No other culture has produced anything similar on its own- all other similar styles come from China, not invented independently. Same with Roman architecture. All of Europe uses it, but no other cultures have actually come up with their own style. They all just copy older civilizations. The few truly "native" styles are probably Egyptian, Mesoamerican, Indian, Chinese, Greek, and Arab. All others are a mix or derivation.

@JmMateo933 Not quite. The Wide President who started the war is also the one who pulled Russia away from complete Balkan status in the 1990s. The problem is that we went through that because of economic policies suggested by US Treasury officials. Plus they kept supporting Yeltsin even after he bombed the Parliament building. So while the conflict atm is terrible it's still somehow better than letting them surround the border and potentially cutoff all trade even if we don't do anything wrong.

@Harahvaiti Ah, yes. It seems you've learned from the best at using whataboutism. Regarding what you said: you're right- after ordination, Orthodox priests cannot be married. But, given the young age of marriage in most Orthodox countries, this rarely presents itself as a problem. The vast majority of clergy are married. It's still miles ahead of the Catholic tradition of enforced clerical celibacy and, to your point, "plenty of cases" is nothing compared to the enormous size and scale of the scandals in the 20th century that ruined the Church's reputation from which it still hasn't recovered. And yes, this is why I said a Lutheran could make the argument, but a Catholic could not.

But the fundamental structure and features-- the cells of the church forming a single building, the masonry, icon painting, arches- these are all Byzantine features. The later styles all stemmed from this original mason-building style. Neo-Byzantine, Russian Baroque, Russian neoclassical, all take some inspiration from the original style Wooden pagan architecture is pre-Byzantine and so has its own style, but how many building aside from Vladimir-Sudzal Gates actually use this visual style?

@tkmushroomer Yes, exactly that. And it's very telling that you don't want that. You'd rather have an aggressive, paranoid Russia that you can singlemindedly hate guilt-free, than cooperate with Russia, at the potential cost of your pride. Absolutely insane. You can spew back all the times Russia did something to warrant being excluded from Europe, I could reference Finland or Italy or Germany. Anyway, including Russia in Europe would put a stop to the very things that you think justify keeping it out. By excluding it, you're just perpetuating the same cycle and creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Which is why, again, I think you don't want Russia to be a part of Europe, even it if would benefit you. It would hurt some sense of pride.
