@bmw803 Sorry to repeat but, are you fucking serious? Have you ever actually been in NY and ridden the L? It sucks. You need to have companies bid for sole ownership and maintenance of the system, but keep the line organization to a state agency. See France or Germany. Or Japan, even better. If companies are allowed to do what they did in New York, you'll have multiple separate lines and have to pay each company a fee to get onto their private little line. That is, until the government steps in and unifies the lines, then you're just left with a scrambled mess.

@bay04riding Well, while I believe you, the article you cited only displays opposing opinions, and no primary sources or data. But I still think it's true, since the US has an especially hard time agreeing to anything resembling a city. It's a national fear, and it hinders progress. But beyond that, American unions tend to be poorly run due to redundant positions instead of re-assignment, and I'm sure there's some old-fashioned greed there, too. Unions in other countries don't have this problem with overhead, and I'm not sure why. They get paid about the same if not more depending on country, and get it done at a fraction of the cost.

@lukasrojko3392 No, they are. There's a simple reason the U.S. is so wealthy and powerful: geography! It's surrounded by two oceans, a weak neighbor to the north and a friendly one to the south. Its climate is temperate and there are lots of rivers so the early colonists had free transportation to trade! Boston, NYC, Chesapeake Bay, are all natural harbors which makes trading easier. Since you're surrounded by oceans you've almost never had a foreign power come in and destroy things, so you could focus for 250 years uninterrupted on building businesses. Americans aren't special, they just got very lucky. No matter who settled on that piece of land, they'd become successful. It's just perfect luck.
