This is a result of the education system. Pretty much every system in Europe (for better or worse) crams more subjects into the curriculum. Russia has ~13 per year, I understand US has ~7. This makes students have a wider range of knowledge at the cost of some depth (though I think it's better since most of the depth is forgotten after final exams anyway, I assume this is true in the US too).

@raifthemad What world are you living in? While Soviet film was politically tinted, the rules were much less restrictive then than Hollywood is now— George Lucas went out of his way to mention it as a positive example when asked about unwritten expectations for movies in Hollywood. Give it a watch. Also you can't tell me Battleship Potemkin wasn't a good movie

That's really sad. One must ask how German and French (and European more widely) films ended up screening American films to begin with, which I assume started the cycle of snubbing domestic-made films. India doesn't seem to have this problem, and China currently screens plenty of US films but (to say nothing of their quality) has plenty of hit Chinese-produced works

@andylaw3222 So the solution, instead of supporting small (good) German producers and directors and hope they grow... is to watch Shrek 4? Lol

Not surprising when you think about it. Cultural attention is finite and it has to be directed somewhere. Not every country has the sheer population and money to produce enough films for the entire year, so they're going to import some. So the country that focuses on itself the most is going to consume the most of its own movies. It's also the military guarantor of Europe and English is already the dominant language, so that's why the US also exports so much of its film abroad, and why Europe consumes it.

@_Jay_Maker_ Give China a few decades and theirs will be up to snuff with yours. Knowing their penchant for efficiency and centralization, it'll probably be free at the point of service. Then you'll have your example to follow. And 3x fewer people to worry about.

@maroonedexplorer6622 It takes over 8 hours to get from Moscow to Vladivostok. Somehow Russians are well-educated about the world. "Country big" is an excuse for people who want to be culturally insular

"Wars happen so Americans can learn about geography"

@LucasFernandez-fk8se Not usually, no. Most of the time civilians are the ones getting their lives destroyed and the original goal isn't even achieved. Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Congo, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Haiti.. the list goes on I do agree that some cases are justified though, like Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. One could also argue Yugoslavia.

@Cecilia-ky3uw Russia's pretty low density but in the few areas where there is a lot (mostly European Russia) there are lines already built with more planned. Also the coldness thing is only partially true— Siberia isn't the frozen waste Americans think. There are roads, they're just costlier to maintain. Can't argue that China and Japan have an easier time financing high-speed rail than the US, but you've got California and the Northeast. Easy wins there, yet you have nothing. Freight is important, but only in the US does it seem to cannibalize passenger rail. You're right that most of these problems are policy based (besides your highway system, transitioning away from that will bankrupt you lol) and that's what makes it sad. It's all bad governance, and crazier still is you're being compared to China and Russia here, and losing

@Cecilia-ky3uw Fair enough. Thanks for saying where there is a gap in your knowledge, that kind of humility and honesty is hard to find on the Internet. I'm just saying that other big countries with lots of empty land (Russia China) have built high speed rail and better public transport in general. The US can do it too, they have way more money and the rails are already built, they just need to upgrade them and make them more passenger-focused.

@Honre123 Huh, I guess Osama achieved his goal. He (metaphorically, much to his chagrin) destroyed the US.
