  1. Lol, that actually makes it worse. They were defeated and forced to take the money at gunpoint. The fact that the Americans even offered money meant that they understood what they were doing was wrong and wanted to cleanse their image in the eyes of history. Instead of owning up to being colonizers and just taking the land.

  2. ​ @reharl4953  I don't give it much credence since the US already had an aristocratic class in all but name. It was just a power grab by regional landed men. Not dissimilar from Yeltsin breaking up the USSR.
