@devindevon While that's true, as far as physical copies are concerned, master copies are absolutely necessary. Everything seems set in stone, until it isn't. Toy Story was almost accidentally deleted completely until it was discovered that one of the graphic designers had a backup that she took home with her.

@devindevon 1) Why do you keep posting the same comment everywhere? Why devote time to support UMG? 2) That would be something our descendants would do- unless you think we just don't care about the Library of Alexandria (much of whose more popular content had already been re-copied elsewhere, notice the parallels) but still set the world's collective knowledge back several hundred years. Granted, music isn't that applicable, but why not just keep them rather than let them perish? "You were never going to hear the masters anyway" Yeah, but at least someone could have! Now nobody will, ever. And yes, having something preserved or fortified is valuable. Most medieval history is known today because wealthy patrons didn't skimp on materials- instead of paper, they used parchment, which lasts 1,000+ years. So yes, "titanium remasters" will be useful. Not to us, but to later generations.

@deadstar44 You could probably rebuild the window, but French labor costs would be way too high... the medieval labor market and culture allowed for craftsmen to work for pennies and still afford to live (because so few amenities existed at the time). That's not reproducable, unless someone in France is willing to part with his money.

@johannherveux1490 I think he means, it will never be faithfully recreated. The specific variety of oak that was used for building in the 19th century is largely absent from France in large enough tree sizes or even number to recreate. More importantly, virgin forests shadow new trees, forcing them to grow slower and denser. This process takes hundreds of years, and can't be manufactured. So, while Australian wood (probably hardwood, doubt it would do well in French climate) may work, it won't be the same.
