This opens them up to even greater problems, though (although this is unlikely) since they're not a signatory to the UNCLOS, Russia could claim waters off of Alaksan territory. It would be violating international law, but the US couldn't legally object, since they don't recognize the legitimacy of that law anyway. And to quickly ratify the UNCLOS would give America another headache, since they would have to support Greece against Turkey, who also doesn't recognize the law (because it would make the entire sea off Turkey's coast exclusively Greek territory).

@chrisx2953 No, the natives are Ainu and (ironically) were loyal to the Tsarist government until it betrayed them to the Meiji Japanese, who assimilated or exterminated them. Even more ironically, Japan (despite having been the one who erased their culture) is doing a better job now of trying to help them rebuild a sense of identity, whereas the Russian government refuses to give them minority group status.

This depends on whether future administrations would agree to such a plan. The Dutch happen to be in a position of needing to, for survival. So of course they'd follow through with the plan, regardless of who is elected. On many other issues, I can't imagine that every Dutch administration had had the same opinion. I don't think long-term planning is a strong suit of democracies, sadly.

@Demicleas I think the point he is making is that nobody is asking for territorial changes to the US on the basis of past genetic history, we all just say "oh that's such a shame that it happened" and go back to trying to chip away at more russian territory

@PikaPluff You are exactly what I am describing. If you are trying to hold Russia to a certain standard, I expect you to do it yourselves. Giving 1/2 of Oklahoma is only the start. Absent an official language, the US must give incentives to states to promote native language learning among its tribes. Hawai'i especially. Can't do that? Then the U.S has no right to ask Russia to do anything.

@michaeldunham3385 I can't speak for Chechnya, but in the case of Dagestan, it was legal. They invaded first, and they wanted to establish an Islamic caliphate including Chechnya in it. So for some of the wars it made sense for Russia to attack.

You forgot about fertilizer. It's likely Australia won't be able to support its current population without surplus food supply, and most of Aus is a fucking desert. The land they can grow on, needs to be efficient. No fertilizer, less food, people starve.

@PikaPluff In this regard? No. Not even close. The Ainu are trapped in a political issue- it is not a matter of culture. Russia, for all of its faults, has had much better interactions and more successfully avoided eliminating native cultures compared to the US. My original comment was simply explaining what he meant, not creating an equivalency between the US and Rusaia treatment ot native tribes.

It's because Aus doesn't have a big enough population to create competitive companies. Phone companies, for example, need a large domestic market before they have the money (= tech!) to make hi-tech phones for international markets. This is true of everything else, that isn't raw materials. Want to make successful manufacturing industry? Need to have lots of people building new things for factory to be profitable. Australia will never be free, sadly.

@Acidlib Given that people are now talking about attempting to break up the Russian Federation? I'd say it aged like wine. Though I wish it hadn't.
