  1. You forgot about fertilizer. It's likely Australia won't be able to support its current population without surplus food supply, and most of Aus is a fucking desert. The land they can grow on, needs to be efficient. No fertilizer, less food, people starve.

  2. It's because Aus doesn't have a big enough population to create competitive companies. Phone companies, for example, need a large domestic market before they have the money (= tech!) to make hi-tech phones for international markets. This is true of everything else, that isn't raw materials. Want to make successful manufacturing industry? Need to have lots of people building new things for factory to be profitable. Australia will never be free, sadly.
