@chrisx2953 No, the natives are Ainu and (ironically) were loyal to the Tsarist government until it betrayed them to the Meiji Japanese, who assimilated or exterminated them. Even more ironically, Japan (despite having been the one who erased their culture) is doing a better job now of trying to help them rebuild a sense of identity, whereas the Russian government refuses to give them minority group status.

@Demicleas I think the point he is making is that nobody is asking for territorial changes to the US on the basis of past genetic history, we all just say "oh that's such a shame that it happened" and go back to trying to chip away at more russian territory

@PikaPluff You are exactly what I am describing. If you are trying to hold Russia to a certain standard, I expect you to do it yourselves. Giving 1/2 of Oklahoma is only the start. Absent an official language, the US must give incentives to states to promote native language learning among its tribes. Hawai'i especially. Can't do that? Then the U.S has no right to ask Russia to do anything.

@PikaPluff In this regard? No. Not even close. The Ainu are trapped in a political issue- it is not a matter of culture. Russia, for all of its faults, has had much better interactions and more successfully avoided eliminating native cultures compared to the US. My original comment was simply explaining what he meant, not creating an equivalency between the US and Rusaia treatment ot native tribes.

@Acidlib Given that people are now talking about attempting to break up the Russian Federation? I'd say it aged like wine. Though I wish it hadn't.
