I know this is probably more for an evolutionary biologist, but it strikes me as odd that the sun, something our bodies have evolved to live under for millions of years, could still do our bodies any harm. In the case of Caucasians, I could understand, because their skin evolved very recently to adapt to a lack of sunlight. So living in sunny climates simply isn't as safe for them. But I still hear doctors recommend sunscreen even for Nilotic Africans (remember that Sudanese soldier with pitch-black skin on the cover of National Grographic? Him.) How does that make any sense? Even ancient people lived to 60 (the average was 30, but only bc of infant mortality estimates). Are doctors correct in prescribing an industrial product as something completely essential to our health and preventative of a disease that, according to them, has been around as long as the sun has existed?
