@JohnDorian-j7x I would agree with you if the US hadn't just passed a law banning TikTok and likely has its sights set on Telegram. It's no different to China, it just has a larger pool of satellite states whose companies it allows, giving the illusion that its business environment isn't politically controlled. Also worth mentioning that China, for the period of time that it did dominate Asia, only demanded tributes. Even after inventing gunpowder and working bombs, it didn't try to subjugate other kingdoms— it demanded tribute, but was happy to trade with them. Compare that to the US, who will destroy a country without hesitating because they show even slight signs of political or economic sovereignty (not using the dollar to trade in oil, trying to nationalize industry, etc). Who do you think would be the better world leader?

@lanija19 Nobody was killed in Ukraine either, but the Poroshenko administration was hostile to minority languages (moreso Russian than Romanian or Polish). The eastern Ukrainians simply didn't want to lose their culture and connection to Russia proper. That being said it is difficult to say for sure if the referendum held there during 2014 to secede was actually reflecting the population, since many already fled and people were intimidated by the soldiers posted at voting stations.

@lanija19 Read my comment again. I was replying to you giving reasons for the Ukrainians seceding. This means their reason was already in place before the Maidan started, before May 2014. In fact before 2013. Before 2014, no one in Ukraine was killed (by the government at least) for being a Russian speaker or fighting for their autonomy within Ukraine— prior to Maidan, pretty much everyone spoke Russian aside from the West.

@deborahhebblethwaite1865 Actually, it is the rest of the world with the problem. The Russian language makes a clean distinction that effectively eliminates the debate around "what does it mean to be French/Japanese/American?" Россиянин is a citizen of Russia. Of aby ethnicity. Русский is an ethnic Russian. Simple as that. No loaded question's that blur the lines between "scary immigrants" and implying they are integrally a part of "Russia" (whatever that means.) If you want to say you're an ethnic Russian who's also a Russian citizen, русский will often suffice, but россиянин русского происхождения (Russian of russkiy heritage) is even more clear. If you're ethnic Russian but not from Russia, you can say Я русский но не россиянин/не родился в Российи. (I am russkiy but wasn't born in Russia). And if you're not ethnically Russian and not from Russia, you can just say whichever group or tribe you come from.
