CatEyes1993 Most Europeans I know don't take time out of their day to do that. They usually prepare 2 or 3 big meals on the weekend and eat away at that during the week. For example: soup, lasagna, and fish (each with sides) can be prepared in a day if you hurry. Then during the week you just warm up a dish and eat.

CatEyes1993 Part of it is that most of America actually had pretty low property value on account of there being nothing to do there. Most of the U.S. is just cookie-cutter suburbs with nothing that adds value to the area. Additionally, most houses here are cheaply built, out of fiberboard (compressed sawdust) and chicken wire, so not only are the walls thinner, allowing for more space, but they're easier to build. On one hand, that adds to the economy; on the other, it means a 100 year old building is almost unheard of, because nothing lasts that long. Cost per use goes down the older the house gets, but because they keep eroding, we just keep building new ones, with even fewer materials.

Svetlana Sidorova I think you're still in the territory of diminishing returns— repairing a cheap watch, for instance, takes more time and trouble than it's worth. A Rolex, on the other hand, should last you a lifetime. It if fails, repairing it will add another 10 years to its life. This is assuming you go to a competent repairman in either case. The quality of the repair can effect the product life top.

@jeffreyholbrook1984 Green doesn't necessarily mean disposable- glass is more eco-friendly than plastic, and is usable for much longer in terms of tupperware and cooking supplies. The new phenomenon of planned obsolescence doesn't have much to do with environmentalism, just padding profit margins.

@AdamSmith-gs2dv You kind of are... at least, if we're analyzing the nation as a whole. Then again, Americans don't seem to understand collective identity and/or responsibility, and veer towards individualism every time.
