@herlescraft Georgia is a throughway for Russian trade into the Middle East, Iran, and Turkey. Currently Azerbaijan is friendly, but has been getting closer to Turkey, so Russia invaded to prevent American power projection in its most economically important area. And to quell ethnic infighting, which was a genuine problem- Abkhazians have had fears of being Georgianized (Kartvelified) since the Russian Empire. Russia already has access to the Baltic, and the military strength to enforce their free passage. Russia would only be gaining a slightly better geographic position by taking the Baltics.
