@Gerald Tyler Yet, buying a Swiss watch is seen as 'wasteful' and 'living above your means'. And real estate is inaccessible for most. You really can't win in this situation- live at or below your means, and you end up paying a lot more, in little pieces. Buy something nice, so its value increases (or cost-per-use goes down)? You're also vilified. The poor simply aren't liked. It doesn't matter whether they're responsible or not.

@KuraIthys Personally, I wouldn't mind those things, but only for practicality's sake. 50 rooms gives me lots of space for a gym, pool, forge room, woodshop, painting studio, etc etc And it's important to remember that our desire for status isn't some perversion of society- it's a natural human instinct, and should be (healthily) fueled. It's mentally gratifying to indulge in your possessions once in a while. That being said I agree, wealth for the sake of status is a dead-end in the long term.
