Africa wasn't a land before time, but it was significantly less developed than the rest of the world. Its empires were smaller and shorter lived. In addition, most of them were reliant (as empires are) on trade, and could never have developed on their own. Without Arab traders, the Mali, Aksum, and Songhai empires simply wouldn't have survived. Africa simply wasn't meant for large empires. Its shape is vertical, making it much harder to establish dominance over a large amount of area quickly (climate varies too much in latitude). The Sahara is another thing to consider. Geography doomed Africa. Sorry.
