@akalion213 Except that quality doesn't always go up. Capitalism is much older than Communism and people's lives have fluctuated under it. Capitalism has almost inevitable crashes every few decades, and if you consider a market capitalistic then feudalism was also capitalism. Just because a society is capitalist doesn't automatically make everyone's life better. It can go either way. Ironically it takes a stance against capitalism (rejecting short term profit and sinking losses into building and nurturing domestic industries) that develops a nation, not capital itself.

@cmconley33 True, but Evangelical (and generally conservative) Americans love to call whoever doesn't support Israel anti-Semitic, as if the government and the people are the exact same thing.

This is the same I've heard- I'm working with Ukrainians right now, and the dominant idea is "let's all just be people- not Russian, Ukrainian, but just person to person." It's a perspective I admire and agree with. Though the conflict was started by Crimea's seizure, I do think a compromise must be reached. The fighting needs to stop

@FATMIKED5183 This is the eternal problem. If the USSR had gotten a little bit farther west, into the German territory past the Danish straits, their biggest geographical struggle would have finally been over. But because it wasn't a market-based system, it failed due to inefficiency and mismanagement of resources.

TheGhost Putin could do better. If he let private businesses thrive (if he's paranoid, make sure that they're watched by the state) then Russia would be much better. I think, as usual, the Chinese have outdone us here. They have cities most other countries could dream of, yet their Communist Party is intact and exerts nearly total control. Not great for human rights, but fantastic for dveelopment.
