@Shenzhou. Free of charge? That's not a good argument. Just because something is free, doesn't make it good. And yes, in America they do teach about American history, but they don't do it behind barbed wires, and they teach the perspective of many different people, not just the English who came there first. And many are ashamed for destroying the Native culture, which cannot be replaced. I hope the Han people make the choice not to repeat their mistakes.

@Shenzhou. I don't doubt that, but China's intentions are different. Violence has been there for decades, yet they only add the wired fences now. This region is very important to China as a buffer against India, and the Communist Party fears it will side with India and/or surrounding Muslim countries. After all, it has only been a part of China since the Communist Party formed. Thats not very long in the span of history. They don't actually care about safety for the people there. It's about a buffer zone with India, as well as the mineral resources in the area. And the loyalty to China will be easy, when the population is replaced by Han Chinese, or by Uighurs who are culturally Han. It's all money and power.

@Shenzhou. It's a simple explanation, but not a good one. Your answer only told me how the barbed wire was put there, not why it was only recently installed when the government started to discourage practices like keeping a beard and speaking the Uighur language, which has nothing to do with Islam. They say it is to combat extremism, but if it really was, they'd just discourage religion, not try to destroy their entire culture and replace it with Han. And yes, I'm aware of the history of the area, but it has been independent from China for much, much longer. Only during the Ching Dynasty was the entire area occupied. Before that, China had no control over the region, only the east. Why can't they be left alone? They don't even travel to the Han portion of China, they live in the desert and could easily be contained there. Why are you bothering them?

@blackdog1153 Because Chinese Christians are still Han Chinese. The Uighurs are an entirely different culture. Not only are they changing their religion, they're erasing their identity as a people. That's much more extreme, and it's being carried out on a much larger scale than with any other religion in China (except maybe Buddhism, but Free Tibet has a lot of attention already).

@konstantingr5928 What is propaganda about this? They're walking in the streets, asking actual people about what they think, at great personal risk. They're not listening to some government official say "everything's perfect!"
