@chrissy_g For the price-conscious (who think that seeing their own is cheaper than buying— on the same logic that cooking at home is cheaper) They're in for a ride awakening. Genuinely good quality fabrics are hard to come by, and the fabrics themselves are often way more expensive than premade stuff. Add to that the learning curve, and its easier to just splurge on some "ethical" brand with money coming out of its nose. There's no solid, middle-road option anymore. We've truly devolved back to feudalism. Except this time, nobody even makes Sunday clothes anymore.

@nickhard7615 Yep. It's been around for a long time. They also drain groundwater in India and then sell that same water back to them, in Dasani bottles.

@nickhard7615 This is more a look at the tactics used rather than the emotional side, but New Internationalist has a story titled Babies Mean Business

Still better than the current situation. At least those shops had a million other shops competing for business

@johnphipps4105 That's all well and good, but 'capitalism' in the Smithian sense, then, has never been done. The US government/elite has always been a strong presence in US civilian life.

@youraftermyrobotbee Eh, there was clearly a way to make it work in the 20th century without jacking up the price to "account for lost recurring profits".

@nickjw88 4 years too late. Unless he de-ages 20 years tomorrow, he's not doing anything meaningful in the span of the next 2 months.

@Constantin_91 Yes, everything I've gotten from the USSR is ugly but built like a brickhouse. When market forces aren't dominating the economy, enormous amounts of money get funelled into production quality. Basically extremely heavy subsidizing of material and labor costs.

@driftergrey Sometimes, I type too fast for my own food...

@ziljin True, but it's WAY harder to justify raising prices suddenly like that for staple crops. Everyone has a rough idea of what food is priced at, so any rapid shift would cause riots. Imagine some mf trying to double the price of potatoes
