Speaking from personal experience, it's possible your Polish friend wasn't keen on spilling the details of a life tragedy to strangers. Some acquaintances of mine told me their stories of surviving World War Two, but had to pause throughout, because it was very emotional. They told me that they wouldn't tell just anyone, and were tired of people asking like it's just another anecdote. So in addition to being very sad to recount, it's possible that he'd simply heard people asking for decades and was a little tired of it. In other words, he probably had his reasons, but it was nothing personal.
