@theebs1 To be fair, it wasn't all lost. And the stuff that's survived wasn't only preserved by Japan and/or Taiwan, either. Food culture comes to mind. Not everything can be replicated in Taiwan, just because their geography doesn't support some of the spices and crops necessary to make Chinese dishes. Intangible elements of the culture, like focus on education and mindset, haven't changed. It's not nearly as bad as you think. I think people in the West love to lament the loss of culture as a way to really rile up their own hatred of the CCP— but honestly? Look at history. Every single Chinese dynasty has taken enormous efforts to erase the legacy of the previous one(s), because of the folk belief that an Emperor is overthrown because they have lost the Mandate of Heaven. To prove themselves, then, the new Emperor always sought to make himself look better and his predecessor look worse. What better way to do that than tarnishing their legacy? In a way, Mao couldn't have been more Chinese. He just happened to be the most effective Emperor.

I hesitate to think that Qing China was a haven for peasants and they were all wealthy (or even middle class) until the CCP came around. Like it or not, pre-Communist China was just as poor, the only difference was it had a lot more culture. The CCP did actually lift them out.

@theebs1 Because of an old, stubborn man's pride. It really can be that simple.
