@celdur4635 True, but it would have been a fantastic start. Constant access to the sea means more trade with Asia, India, east Africa, and (I mean, it's right there) the US. Maybe in that timeline our relations would have necessarily been better.

@Riftrender Actually, Alaska did have some warm-water ports at the border with Canada. It would have been the least conflict-ridden way for Russia to finally solve its centuries-old search, but we sold it for cheap...

@plusxz821 The difference is in military. Both were sending their troops far away from homeland, but were equally matched. It would not have been a clear American victory.

@celdur4635 No, Vladivostok also freezes :(( Well, that is changing now with climate change, but so is Russia's entire northern coastline, so that doesn't really matter. So it might be useful for a few centuries before humanity is wiped away. But if carbon levels go back down and are restored, it will freeze again. Historically it froze, too. This is why Russia kept going, to Port Arthur in modern-day China. If only...
