  2.  @0uttaS1TE  Actually, that's what Russia is trying to prevent. It got so bad then precisely because we trusted the West enough to direct our economic policy. If Ukraine becomes part of NATO de facto or even in all but name, the US will have enough implicit threat to influence with Russia on pretty much everything. Look up Jeffrey Sachs, one of the four Treasury Secretary economists hired by Yeltsin. He appears to have major regrets over how Washington handled Russia's transition to capitalism.
