The hope (in a political vacuum, devoid of whatever Trump's personal motivations might be) is that the increased prices on foreign goods will force consumers to buy locally-made products instead. The issue with that is 1) not everything has a US-made substitution, and 2) prices across the board will rise (US goods have less competition, and foreign goods have tariffs). Unless Trump invests MASSIVELY in building out industrial infrastructure, basically pouring money into it until it reaches a critical mass of efficiency and scale to compete in price with Chinese goods— until then, everything will be more expensive for Americans.
