Honestly? Even if Israel does completely win— eventually, its descendants will realize what atrocities have been committed here. That will REALLY suck— not only do they have the trauma of the Holocaust, but also the utter shame of having perpetrated one themselves. I won't envy being an Israeli in 30 years. It's so pathetic what a tortured existence they will have created for themselves— and it will NEVER go away. This will weigh on their collective psyche forever.

It's fairly simple to me: the Jews in diaspora in the 1930s and 40s forced the British (through acts of terrorism, like Irgun setting off bombs in their embassies) to allow them to migrate to what was at that point Mandatory Palestine. There were plenty of alternatives to a Jewish state outside of the holy land, including the US and Argentina. But they insisted on the "Holy Land" because Uganda had gone so poorly. The entire point of Zionism, as outlined by Theodor Hertzl in the early 1900s, was to be a colonial outpost. He wrote to Cecil Rhodes and made as much very clear. “You are being invited to help make history. It doesn’t involve Africa, but a piece of Asia Minor; not Englishmen but Jews… How, then, do I happen to turn to you since this is an out-of-the-way matter for you? How indeed? Because it is something colonial.” This is in Herzl's own handwriting— he copied the letter he wrote into his journal.
