To an extent, yes. Turkey controls Russia's only route to European markets that isn't frozen half of the year (St. Petersburg is also easily blockable, and freezes). Without Crimea, Russia has no easy way of establishing enough of a presence to dissuade Turkey from blocking the Bosporus Strait entirely. It's all a big game of chess. I don't think Russia cares all that much about Crimea as a landmass, but its location does make it very important.

@razvananghel7492 Yes, it does. Relative to Ukraine, it has had a much longer presence in the region. Bear in mind that it was first annexed in 1783, which is only 7 years after the United States was founded. Should the U.S. give up its entire territory, since if Russia doesn't have a claim after ~250 years, then surely the U.S. doesn't either? If you're going by that logic, then give back western Ukraine to Poland- the historical inhabitants of "Lviv" (Lwów) are not Ukrainians! If you want the borders to be reset to when the Tatars were still the majority, you should be prepared to do the same for people who feel that their land was taken and is unfairly being ruled by your country, too. How far back do you want to stretch this? Should France, Spain, England, Portugal, etc, all submit themselves to Italy because Romans were the historical inhabitants of these countries?

@fabioshire97 Russia offered and Germany politely declined, not sure what you're trying to say here lol Also, the Kurils were never once inhabited by Japanese, they were populated by native Ainu, who cooperated with the Russian Empire for centuries. Imperial Japan started to claim that Ainu were Japanese after having intermixed with them, but that doesn't make their claim valid- it's never been "their" land.

@KamepinUA So... you stil mean Russia. We broke out from the Mongols first, we get to keep the name. Not to mention, Novgorod is the founding city of Rus' and has always been separate from Kiev. So Ukraine cannot really claim to be Russia, either.

@alekshukhevych2644 You don't need to be anti-Semitic to be fascist. Ukraine does have its own fascist movements, even though it has a Jewish President. Bear in mind that Ukraine's modern founder, Stepan Bandera, publicly declared his intent to cooperate with Adolf Hitler. It's written as the 3rd point of the 1941 Declaration. Modern Ukraine has fascist roots, the ethnicity of the President doesn't really change that.

@razvananghel7492 You can get rid of the country, but the nation will still exist. If Russia falls, you know where they'll go straight to first? Europe's migrant crisis will loom like a childish affair compared to what will happen if Russia were to collapse. For your own sake, I would pray that never happens. If Russia goes down, Ukraine and Belarus go with it.

@alekshukhevych2644 I'm aware of the founding of the People's Republic, but I think it was too short-lived to be considered a legitimate start to the Ukrainian state. Not to mention, Western Ukraine is typically considered the heartland of Ukrainian culture, so Stepan Bandera operating in that region only confirms that its political center happens to be there. And my point wasn't that Russia isn't fascistic— don't deflect. I was saying that Ukraine has fascist tendencies, even though Zelenskiy is a Ukrainian Jew. My point was that having a Jewish leader doesn't make Ukraine immune from nationalism or fascism.

@kirgan1000 That's true, but anyone that controls the Crimean Peninsula can block any country in its shores very easily (owing to its central location and long coastline). It's all strategy.
