The regional powers are making concessions that they're not happy about-- but which are far better than the alternative.

@warriorson7979 I am convinced this is also the reason for the NATO intervention in Yugoslavia in 1999. Bomb Russia's closest ally, then split it up like you did Russia. The State Department must have had a field day with that one..

@everhall306 Even from that point of view, the US knowingly became the straw that broke the camel's back. There were better ways to solve the conflict than by bombing Serbia. Btw, I wasn't talking about the breakup, but about Kosovo. It's another military base and presence near Serbia to counter Russian influence.

@UCDXzqv_G1YW_VJGxM7U1GOg Bruh Are you fucking stupid? The Ring road (main infrastructure of Afghanistan) was constantly being attacked and destroyed by Taliban. With no connections between areas, how is a country supposed to function? Even the Americans couldn't achieve infrastructure security. The Afghans never had a chance.

@everhall306 It's always been the goal. The US takes after its father. Colonize everything. And I'd say just threatening air raids and/or NATO ground troops, or negotiating through the USSR (since, despite Tito's independence, the two did communicate) to stop the fighting, should have been considered. Granted, Kosovo is ethnically Albanian now, but its demographic past is unclear and it's been a part of Serbia for much longer than the US has existed. The name Kosovo is a Serbian word. And I don't think the US would necessarily support the idea of secession unless it suited its needs. (Their own Civil war- no secession allowed. Crying over Tibet and Chechnya, but silent on Northern Ireland and Spanish Basque. The Americans are very opportunistic.)

@everhall306 Then through Russia, as the conflict was entirely within Serbia at the time. And you're right, my mistake. They could have done lighter on the raid itself, as many of the affected areas were civilian- hospitals (which is illegal, btw), cultural monuments, businesses, etc, were caught in the NATO bombing campaign. Definitely didn't seem like a purely humanitarian operation. And that fundamentally contradicts America's own Constitutional law regarding it's own states. If, for instance, Texas or Hawai'i (most likely cases) wanted to secede, the US wouldn't let them. But it supports splintering outside of it's own borders? I just don't think it's very fair, hence the objections and "whataboutism" of other ambitious countries. Plus, that assessment would place both Abkhazia and especially (ethnically and linguistically) Crimea under Russian control. There were attempts by separatists to do the same in Mikolaev and Odessa, too. Not an easy sell for the US.

@everhall306 Well, it might be apples and oranges right now, but the Good Friday Agreement was only ratified in 1998. And tensions are starting flare up again over Brexit. Not to mention, up until very recently, Spain's policy towards Basque was very similar to the Chinese in Xinjiang. Culturally assimilate. I don't think Spain will try that again, but England might. And France still wants to assimilate Brittany- everyone must be French, after all.
