A better question to ask would be why NATO even existed after 1991. Russia was poor, weak, and VERY pro-Western thanks to Yeltsin. A new military bloc that grouped Russia and Europe together could have been done. It seems that wasn't to the Americans' liking.

@stephenjenkins7971 They aren't the only brigades with views like that. Azov is the most famous, but there's also Aidar, Tornado, 301, Right Sector... many more that are even less known. It is a widespread problem, that Western sources reported on since 2013 until it became inconvenient for the war effort.

They did care, there were almost immediate counter-protests in the south and east— the places that voted for Yaunkovich the most. Zelensky came to office on a peace platform, and then (as the video shows) conducted mock wargames with the US in the Black Sea. He betrayed his own voters. People don't like him now, they just don't have a better option. Opposition TV channels, even Ukrainian ones, have been banned. None of this is democratic at all. Not Zelensky's current actions and especially not the Maidan. Frankly even if I believe you and say that most people agreed with Maidan, it was done in an extremely undemocratic way and weakens Ukraine's own government. What kind of "democracy" can only function through riots? The Congress or Rada has failed its core function at that point and doesn't deserve to exist.

What those nations want doesn't matter. They contribute effectively nothing to NATO. The US is the lynchpin behind the entire thing— they provide the money, the logistics, the training. Without the US, NATO ceases to exist. It isn't a partnership of equals in any way, and those nations have no way of sustaining NATO. It is to to the US whether NATO continues to exist, so why should Poland and Estonia get to dictate how trillions of American dollars and manpower is spent?

Multiple firsthand reports of hundreds being killed but only a few dozen being reported KIA. Not a stretch of the imagination given how unpopular the war already was. Ever wonder why US journalists in Iraq aren't allowed to film caskets being sent home?

@notfunny333 Maybe, but there are plenty of them who are poor or just middle-class, in every country where they have diaspora. I think it's just their national psychology. They fundamentally feel insecure and weak (ironic given their whole religion revolves around being divinely favored) and so seek to manipulate larger countries to act as their bodyguard. They have never had an expansive empire with land and defensible borders, so over the centuries they specialized in more 'abstract' professions. This brought them wealth and protection, though it was built through a shaky network of alliances and snaking their way through societies' higher functions. Instead of focusing on fundamentals of nation-building, they just kept at the same strategy of mooching off other societies' stability. Until they reconcile with their neighbors or just move to a part of the world where their small size and population isn't an existential threat, they will constantly be doing this. Caught in a spiral of paranoia and opportunism.

You're celebrating the fall of the only secularist government who has a legitimate claim to the entire country? You're a naive fool. Just like every other rebel group who takes outside help, you think "Turkey/US/Israel likes me, they'll support me until the end!" Then the end comes, and you're left with nothing. Syria will descend into civil war, Israel will start ethnically cleansing the south of Syria, Kurdistan will be established, and the only place Syria will still exist is in Diaspora in the same countries that helped destroy it. I hope I'm wrong and that HTS has made deals with the Kurds, Turkey, Israel, and the US— but if I'm not, your country will understand what life is like without Assad very soon. May God have mercy on you.

What were they doing between 1991 and 2007 then? Was it really all that urgent if they didn't even ask after Chechnya happened? Russia was poor and weak, and could have been brought into the European system. Europe only has itself to blame for trying to humiliate Russia even after it was already defeated.

@autokrator_ I think YOU don't know what it means. Colony doesn't necessitate settlement. You're viewing through an Anglo lens, because they were one of the only Empires to encourage mass settlement overseas (unlike the French, Belgians, Dutch) that completely replaced the native population (unlike the Spanish, Russians, Portuguese). Korea doesn't need to be settled to be a colony (which it later was anyway). It was occupied by Japan for decades, and they started their settlement and Japonization attempts before WWII.
