@trailersfromhell2539 Jesus, a no true Scotsman fallacy and an appeal to authority? Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! Shame that Hitchens' fans would betray his ideals so soon after his death. You either think rationally, or you don't. Pick a side

Caleb Imrie If that's the case, then the whole interview was a "misunderstanding". Sam's goal is to dissuade people from believing in a God by putting forth evidence that He doesn't exist. Period. Peterson argues that we should believe in God because it's beneficial to society, but that doesn't really answer the question, "Is the belief true?" He's arguing that people, some of whom understand that there is no God, should believe in Him anyway. As I mentioned in another comment, that's self-delusion. And it makes me lose any smidgens of respect I had left for Peterson. The funny thing is, because of Peterson's delusion, he and Harris could argue opposite actions, but both be atheists.

@Mrfizzlewizzletastic I'm glad someone has finally spelled it out in plain English, but that only leads me to ask, why doesn't Peterson do the same? If this is what he's advocating for, he'd be supporting self-delusion on a mass scale. Acknowledging that something isn't true but believing it anyway is extremely detrimental to the human mind- the brain is a muscle, and not using critical thinking skills now will lower your capacity to do it later. And side note, there are plenty of antidotes to nihilism, if you'd even call it that (implying that believing nothing matters is a poison- I guess Peterson thinks it is, but as a clinical psychologist he should understand that all humans have an innate moral compass regardless of belief, and atheism doesn't lead to Russian storybook-style murder lol). Existentialism is one of the most popular, many people practice it without even knowing it. Or optimistic nihilism. Or Zen Buddhism (which takes all supernatural elements out and leaves the meditation.)
