I don't think you get it bc you got stuck in semantics.
By "respected "you seem to mean "loved, cared for, appreciated." He meant respect in a sense of someone looking up to you in a way that might even make him feel intimidated. It's poison when a man respects a woman like this. He does have a point - and I am a woman too. Agree with him 100%.
To be in a relationship with a man who thinks you're "all that" in areas traditionally invoking respect (intelligence, insight, analytical mind, decision making gumption, etc) is, in fact, devastating. He will defer to you and this feels absolutely terrible to a feminine woman at heart.
You're better off with a man who'd say "don't you worry that pretty little head of yours." As long as it's legitimate, a man's loving "condescension" is better than a man's intimidated respect. Trust me, you don't want to feel like Margaret Thatcher, least of all in the bedroom. Nobody wants to screw MT, and those who do, you don't want them. Really, nobody should.
