I think the transmission must not have been fully warmed up. I've noticed in my own IS 500 that it's radically different once it is fully up to temp. Being in full manual mode is pretty much essential if you're trying to have fun, though, really. Glad you finally got to experience one of these. If you're ever in the ATL area I'd be glad to let you have a go in the IS.

My IS 500 has been my favorite car I've owned. It has some quirks, but it puts a big smile on my face when I'm on it. I've also got a BMW X3 for the practical stuff, and while it's more modern and usable, both cars serve their purposes. I just like the way the Lexus feels and all the tactility to the inputs.

@TheS1PikesPeak I would just get a regular RC F. The Track Edition is way too pricey.

@Color Commentary sorry to hear that. I'm still loving every minute of driving my IS 500 and don't know what I'll replace it with. Yeah, it's not a great transmission, but I like the theater when I'm on throttle and the smoothness when I'm not.

@schryvel manual mode is the way to go! I mean... it isn't quite as responsive as a ZF 8-speed, but it does shift gears very quickly. Honestly, it can be a bit jerky if you're not giving it full throttle in manual mode, so if you're just casually driving, auto mode is better.

Having an actual button for heated seats and heated steering wheel? What a concept!

@2ZZGE100 Today I took the IS 500 out tried out some spirited driving in Sport S rather than S+, and after a few turns, the transmission started automatically downshifting when I braked. I was pleasantly surprised. I normally just default to manual mode anyway, but it seemed quite intelligent once it realized what I was doing.

If you like the car, test drive it. Sure, the trans is a little dated, but if you like the car, you will enjoy driving it regardless. 4 months in with mine, and I still get a stupid smile on my face when I give it some gas. That 5.0-liter is everything!

@FructozeProductions Seriously? I've always known that transmissions typically take even longer to get warm compared to engines.
2
@Fructoze Productions I live in the Southeast US. It's pretty warm. But still, it'll take at least 10 minutes after a cold start before the car will give me all it's got. And personally, I'm not going to beat on my car until I know things are up to operating temp. You know, cause I spent money on this car and would like it to last.
2
It's lighter than an M4...
2
It was just a matter of putting it manual mode, or else making sure the car was fully up to temp. It won't give you downshifts under braking unless the trans fluid is fully warm.
2
@vidoga228 OK, don't buy one then. I would probably just get a regular RC F and skip the TE because of how stupidly expensive it is.
2
It probably isn't designed to fit in these cars because they're on an older architecture than the LC.
2
@2ZZGE100 Sadly, @Tedward, I have to confirm this. IS 500 owner, and I feel the same way. If I am in Sport S+ and giving it the beans, it will auto-downshift when I brake hard.
2
@TedwardDrives If I drive my IS 500 in Sport S+ it'll give me the downshifts on hard braking. Mind you - HARD braking, not half-ass braking. Either way, manual mode is 100% better because I can drive at 7/10ths and still make it do what I want. It is possible the trans was either too cold or too hot.
2
@TedwardDrives that's super weird. I could swear they at least had PS4S tires last time I saw one. But that was at the Lexus Performance Driving School, so maybe those were replaced.

@carboydorifutoparty3976 It is not meant as a direct comparson... I'm just saying, even a true M-car is heavier.

The Track Edition gets a titanium exhaust instead of the standard exhaust.

@MPowerSubie12 I mean honestly, the LC 500 is a different thing to this RC F TE. If money was no issue, it's gonna be LC for me as well, but I'm not planning on doing regular track days or pushing my car to the limit.
