  7. I used to visit my grandmother in that area, back in the 70s. Then, all I had to deal with was kids yelling insults. Though there was an occasional shootout on East 14th Street (now, International Blvd), I never came across any. Now, nearly half a century later, it has graduated to this.

The account ran out of money, and after several months, the bank foreclosured on the house. The last time I was there, in 2004, it had the atmosphere of a maximum security prison. Even then, at least you didn't have carjackings. Now, they average about 2 a day, including "nice" areas like Skyline Blvd. Some people won't even visit Oakland, let alone live there. You definitely did the right thing, getting out!

  27. I worked in one nursing home where, in the secured unit, a man paced all night. He went into the unlocked room of 2 women and blackened their eyes. The staff found a facility with an empty secured unit, and moved him there. In another place I worked, there was an angry, violent man. The staff had nowhere else to put him, so the other residents kept their doors locked.

However, there was one time when a blind couple was walking there, and some thugs kidnapped the woman. Someone helped the man call the police, and later, they heard the woman screaming from an abandoned house where they were rapiing her. So true, that's never been a good area.

I haven't been back there since 2005 (except for brief layovers st San Francisco airport), so I only know about the state's demise from YouTube. It breaks my heart, what has become of my beloved state. Big Sur is IMPRESSIVE, isn't it? I used to cruise it all the time. I also visited a couple of hot springs there.

I was horribly bullied, and the authorities merely made stupid excuses for them, saying the bullies were jealous (of what?), and uneducated (well, duh! They were in elementary and middle school!). I wasn't the only victim. Some of my tormentors robbed a donut shop on Lakeshore Avenue and counted the money on our front porch. Another time, they stole several boxes of donuts from that same shop and threw them all over the sidewalk. There were numerous other incidents at school; one of my friends in 7th grade was raped by 2 9th graders. There were more incidents I can't recall, but you get the picture. What you're witnessing now is the culmination of 50 years of coddling criminals. Getting out of Oakland soon as I turned 18 is the BEST decision I ever made!

I understand racism is rampant in Chicago and Detroit, and judging by the gang activity there, it's easy to see why. But the same mess happens in Oakland, without the racism.   86. Oakland has been a cesspool since the mid 1960s. I was born and raised there. My aunt graduated from Castlemont High in 1964; the following year, it made an abrupt downturn. I lived on Trestle Glen Road for nearly 3 years. I attended Crocker Highlands Elementary School and McChesney Junior High (now, Edna J. Brewer Middle School). They were among the best schools in the city, but I was horribly bullied in both, at one point being given a black eye during PE class. All the authorities did was make excuses for them, saying they were jealous (of what?) and uneducated (how educated is an elementary / middle school student supposed to be?). The girl who gave me a black eye didn't get a slap on the wrist; she got a pat on the cheek! What's happening in Oakland now is the culmination of supporting violence and negative stereotypes. Because I couldn't handle it, I tore out of there like a bat out of hell soon as I turned 18. I looked up some of my former tormentors; they're still there, trapped, unable to come and go as they please. Meanwhile, I have found a much better place.

  212. A similar thing happened to me, 50 years ago. I was in the 7th grade when I was ganged up on in PE class and given a black eye. Since I was being constantly bullied, it was easier for the teacher and staff to blame me. I was pulled out of Oakland public schools and sent to a Christian school, which was a HUGE improvement. My experience is by no means isolated. That same year, an Asian boy from my school was bullied to the point where he snapped and stabbed someone with a butter knife in the cafeteria, resulting in death. His parents sent him to Hong Kong, to live with relatives. Skyline High was one of the better schools back then, though I don't know if that's the case now. It was the school for drugs, while Oakland High was the school for violence. At least you could say no to drugs, but every once in awhile, a story would be in the news about a high achieving student freaking out because someone slipped LSD in his milk when his back was turned.

Still, though, I hear stories of rampant car thefts in San Francisco and freeway shootings in the South Bay. Several years back, I heard of a girl attending her first high school prom in Richmond, and she was gang raped outside the gym. About 30 kids witnessed the crime, and no one called 911 or took pictures; they just ignored it. Even 50 years ago, Richmond had a worse reputation than Oakland.

Finally , she didn't stop, and the 2 guys physically attacked her. Fortunately, a cop was there to put a stop to it.

  258. I grew up in Oakland during the 1960s and 70s. Though it wasn't anywhere near as bad then, I saw this coming. As a child, I saw how they coddled and made excuses for schoolyard bullies. Now, 2 generations later (3 by ghetto standards), you see the results. The gas station owner said he was going to rebuild and pray. He is a FOOL! He needs to GTFO of Oakland! I fid, Doon as I turned 18. It is the best decision I ever made!

Once, a man offered me a ride in his car, and when I declined, he said he wasn't going to rape me, because that had happened to his sister. I still declined. Fortunately, he drove away.
