  2. Also, a 73 year old Asian man was mugged in front of his store in Oakland. He wound up on life support. His 3 daughters had to come from various parts of the country to say goodbye to him before pulling the plug. The thugs were caught; Pamela Price tried to get them off.

  7. I used to visit my grandmother in that area, back in the 70s. Then, all I had to deal with was kids yelling insults. Though there was an occasional shootout on East 14th Street (now, International Blvd), I never came across any. Now, nearly half a century later, it has graduated to this.

  12. MORBID!!! This reminds me of a case in Detroit where the bank was making automatic mortgage payment withdrawals from a woman's checking account. The account ran out of money, and after several months, the bank foreclosured on the house. They sent construction workers out to fix it up, and her mummified body was found inside her jeep in the garage. She had been dead 6 years.

  24. @englishgarden2036  - I left Oakland in the late 70s. It was nowhere near as bad then, but it remains the best decision I ever made. The last time I was there, in 2004, it had the atmosphere of a maximum security prison. Even then, at least you didn't have carjackings. Now, they average about 2 a day, including "nice" areas like Skyline Blvd. Some people won't even visit Oakland, let alone live there. You definitely did the right thing, getting out!

  27. I worked in one nursing home where, in the secured unit, a man paced all night. He went into the unlocked room of 2 women and blackened their eyes. The staff found a facility with an empty secured unit, and moved him there. In another place I worked, there was an angry, violent man. The staff had nowhere else to put him, so the other residents kept their doors locked.

  44. I lived in Palo Alto from the mid 1980s through the mid 1990s. Robberies at Stanford Shopping Center were never even thought of. Much to my dismay, I realize this isn't the first time this year I've heard of someone being robbed there.
