As a teen living in an Oakland ghetto in the mid 1970s, buying and reading the book series was an excellent healthy and wholesome fantasy escape. It helped me make my real escape, soon as I turned 18.

Confucius say, "Woman who puts husband in doghouse will find him in cathouse."

@savannahsmith5401 - there's a book titled, "Old Town in the Green Groves" by Cynthia Rylani which details the Ingalls family leaving Minnesota after the grasshopper plague to go to Iowa. Also, Rose's lawyer, Roger Lee McBride, wrote a series on her life, and also the life of Ma Caroline. There's also Laura's diary, "On the Way Home", about her young family's journey to Missouri, and "A Little House Sampler", with short stories by both Laura and Rose.

"I'm not dead!" 😜

Regarding Laura's and Rose's strained relationship, I understand there's a book called, "Ghosts of the Little House" that discusses it.

That's unfortunate. She should have played it up!

Best - sings around the campfire. Worst - dealing with stampedes. Would I want to be a cowboy? Yes and no. I wish I were that brave, but I'm not.

@sean.furlong1989 - not that I know of. But all they dealt with was more than enough!

Nellie Oleson was a composite character of 3 girls; Nellie Owens was the little girl in Walnut Grove, Genny Masters was the older one in DeSmet, and Stella Gilbert, who was also in DeSmet, and the one who tried to steal Almanzo. Fun fact: Genny Masters, the meanest one, died from the Spanish Flu in 1918, at the age of 51.

My favorite, and the favorite of my best friend who introduced me to the series, is "Little Town on the Prairie".
2
David Erickson - yes, they did. Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House on the Prairie) and her family were cured of malaria with quinine by Dr. Tan back in the early 1870s.

A dealer will gladly give you drugs for free until you're hooked. Then you'll do anything for a fix, including trafficking yourself.

Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House on the Prairie) was going to save her and her husband's herd of sheep from a wolf pack by chasing them off with a pitchfork. Her cousin Lena had considerable fortitude, also. Check out this link: http://shawnmthrasher.blogspot.com/2015/06/by-shores-of-silver-lake-by-laura.html?m=1

I grew up in the 1960s, so I was a full-fledged adult when DARE started. I dabbled in drugs, and though I was fortunate to avoid getting hooked or busted, I wound up wasting extremely valuable opportunities - a mistake I'm still paying for. What led me to lose interest in drugs was working hard to gain control over my life, and pursuing healthy and wholesome activities like snowboarding. I've found the best way to educate kids is to list all the fun things they can do besides drugs. Most already know "drugs are bad - m'kay?" What they need are positive alternatives. I'm currently teaching high schoolers how to become tax free millionaires saving and investing money they might otherwise spend on drugs.

No knowledge of birth control. Many children died in infancy.

A friend of mine contracted it, in the 1980s! She recovered, through treatment by a doctor.

I saw them once in Oakland, when I was 11 years old.

Laura and her family battled diphtheria, scarlet fever, and the mysterious fever and ague which they didn't even know was malaria. All this while Native Americans were being wiped out.
1
@MissJuneBennett - I didn't know Willie Owens went blind as well. All I know about Nellie is that she married, moved to Oregon Territory, then separated from her husband.

My college best friend, who is Navajo, was a huge fan of Louis L'amour.

Nick Trybull - what's racist about it?

We once had a flea problem with our cats. We got rid of the fleas by putting brewer's yeast in the cats' milk.

"If it feels good - don't do it!" - Carrie Nation.

A friend of mine caught the bubonic plague in Marin County, CA, during the early 1980s. She was cured.

They died before they could get it.

David Erickson - an ex told me they used to give syphilitic patients malaria, so the fever would kill the disease. Then, they would cure malaria with quinine.

Why is it weird? My best friend in college is Navajo, from Monument Valley. She too was a huge fan. (I'm black.)
