  1. Why do corvids need to be so smart? To survive, perhaps, maybe they don't need to be so smart, it just is a side effect of some other natural process. For example, I have a degree in Maths, but that's a gross example of the side effect at being a good tool using pack hunter-gatherer. Being smart enough to coordinate a hunt for food and remember what is nutrition and what is poison is the driver of this survival selection. It has a side effect of understanding a lovely abstract game we call Mathethematics. Or perhaps, it's a contemplation of the real world... Idunno.
