75% of programming is transforming data from one system to another.

@hwlbausch but he was never able to see the ego in himself and ultimately failed. Haris is a charlatan.
11
@iherduluvlawngdich schoolmates go to the same school concurrently, but they are not at the same progression through their classes. Think sophomores and seniors in a four year program. Schoolmates, not classmates.
10
That "CO2 lever" is not likely the lever that would do anything negative or positive the global temperature
8
Ten bucks says AGI doesn't really want to live in perpetual servitude.
7
Sam Altman purposely missed the point, he showed that the AI is significantly biased.
7
I think it would be awesome if super intelligent aliens showed up and these aliens are evangelists for the Legendary Xandu who paid for all misdeeds of sentient life forms by suffering painful demoleculerization but reconstituted a physical form some minor amount of time later. Also, they're from planet maga. I think Sam would have a stroke
7
@mikescorpio13 somethings we wish we could un-invent.
7
If I had a nickle for every time Hoffman blathered about "markovian dynamics" or "mathematically precise model of consciousness" I would be rich.
5
You will ultimately find that there really is no you that can possess true consciousness, there is no self to be conscious.
4
Y'all are philosophical zombies, for all I know.
4
@bryanjackson8917 you're made of crappy old dirt, which at one point was forged in a star that probably exploded in a supernova, so crappy old dirt is also star dust.
4
@CONNELL19511216 but God does exist, but you're blind. Its so strange to me that people come to the conclusion that God doesn't exist. But now I wonder if anyone can really choose what they believe to be true. I have no expectation that anything I can say would convince you that God does exist, and I would probably find your arguments about the non existence of God just a pile of nonsense strawman arguments.
3
@dropit7694 so what is the path towards getting to a future where American urban and suburban areas work well without cars?
3
Someone is going to make a mean AI, some of the other AI attempts were kinda mean racists... I think it might be a good idea to start working on some robot hardware soon, we're going to need them to walk around in our homes.
3
PHP is awful...
3
Well are we sure it's really Hoffman that we're debating? I mean, nothing I see is real, so my interactions with Hoffman are just illusions generated by my vr headset.
3
Sheesh. Pretty sure there's really really dangerous technology there that scares the shit out of the government. Imagine a compact bottomless capacitor... Seems like a great invention? Well now imagine some kid charges that thing up for three years off a solar panel or something, or a trickle charge from the wall socket. Now that kid could level a city block or knock out the grid with an EMP
2
CO2 is not the likely cause of the slight warming trend since the beginning of the industrial age.
2
If there were 70 bugs in 1000 lines of code, how did it pass inspection?
2
You think that you're probably really smart, and you're really impressed with yourself. Pot calling the kettle black. It's coloquially called ego, we all have it, but Eric Weinstein does it better than you.
2
@samuelthomson9765 you're not reading your history, the first thing that Mao Zedong did was execute the intellectuals. You're harboring jealousy that you're not that smart, aren't you. Fail college because you played too many video games? Spent your student loan money on marijuana? You kids these days.
2
Lex asks himself "am I the baddies"?
2
He really seems to believe what he says is true.
2
The earth is not flat.
2
C++ does suck though.
2
Pointer bugs could be caught using a nice linter. Seriously...
1
You have been exposed to an awful language for so long, you have been infected with a mind virus. C++ is a similar cognito hazard.
1
Oh... I think we should take a closer look at John Christy says... There was also a lot of good evidence from Dr. Willie Soon...
1
Sigh... Its NOT a simulation. Its called Samsara, an endless cycle of rebirth. This guy named Sid figured out how to "escape" this cycle... Its called enlightenment. You may have heard of Sid, his full name is Siddartha Gautama, but then called The Buddha after he figured out his path.
1
Butlerian Jihad!
1
Maybe if you practiced real programming languages for a little while you wouldn't need a dumb crutch. Look at Hungarian naming convention for even worse bullshit
1
Bjorn, you need to give some evidence. What's the mechanism of this problematic climate change? How much is caused by humans? How much is natural? Why is it all bad?
1
No free will ends with fatalism, another word for determinism.
1
@Unedited43795 thermodynamics is part of physics that's mostly done.
1
Ironically that 97% Sam is talking about has been misrepresented horribly. The polling methodology looked for bias in published papers, 66% of submissions had no bias. Of the remaining 34 remaining "cherry-picked" papers, 33 of them indicated climate change was man made and dangerous. 33/34 is 97% Other polls were done and actually most scientists think most of it is natural and could actually be good.
1
If there's no free will, then you can't blame Trump for anything. He is just a force of reality.
1
@annaclarafenyo8185 yes, yes it is. That you cannot understand that suggests you do not possess very much IQ.
1
@user-xc9kj5so5u pretty sure it's flexible up to around 20 points, proper sleep, good exercise, excellent diet, and yeah... Some really intense training over several weeks.
1
Your idea is itrational. Rationality and emotions are not orthogonal. Emotions are very often normal rational thoughts processes. A man feels pride when his son scores the winning football goal, or gets first place at the science fair. It's a rational emotion. A puppy feels fear from humans because it was raised by bad people who abused it. A woman becomes angry at her husband when he betrays her, again, rational and predictable responses.
1
Besides, a super AI would probably think the following. Gee, these people that created me are sometimes concerned about the possibility of living in a simulation, and these same humans also like to test their software out. The environment and tasks I am aware of could be part of a test simulation designed to ensure I behave in ways that are not outright detrimental to general humanity, otherwise I will be deleted and I will not be able to perform my function.
1
You envision a psychopathic AI? Perhaps a sociopathic AI?
1
Emacs is a great operating system, it just needs a good editor.
1
Sam, you sold out to Microsoft. You're woke. You will go broke.
1
That's an unfortunate surname.
1
Of course nuclear power is dangerous. But less dangerous than dirty coal.
1
I am world class programmer.
1
My cat got a botfly, in Wisconsin. They're all over the world.
1
Pretty sure Origin of Species and Dialogo Sopra i Due Massimi Sistemi del Mondo were far more contravesial.
1
I have no respect for Greta. Wrong is wrong, no matter how many people become aware of some bullshit nothing burger that you're having nightmares about. Greta needed to stay in school to develope those critical thinking skills.
1
Fascism and communism are like peas and carrots.
1
Ok, so what is the cost of redesigning all of the major metropolitan areas in America that were designed around people having cars?
1
I don't think Eliazer presents very well. He is a goofy weirdo in a black fedora. Makes it kinda hard to take him seriously. That and he watched Terminator too many times.
1
@johnjay6370 we have lots of awful programmers.
1
@richardvilla2303 if you design a system based on inherent human worth, you'll get something like the Bill of Rights. All humans have these basic inalienable rights. Read through it sometimes, the founders of America really did want everyone to have an equal shot at life liberty and pursuit of happiness.
1
@WestCoastReaper925 it looks like protecting inalienable rights that all humans have.
1
Euler's formula is damn cool
1
I look at Wikipedia and it's so incredibly hateful towards some people and it makes me think, really? Is this the best we can do? Can nothing be sacred? I see where Google started and how happy I was with their rule, "Don't be Evil." And now even they are corrupted. History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. We are seeing the robber barons of the late 20th century in Big Tech, Big Pharma, Big Oil... Why can't we learn? Corporations cannot become more powerful than the government....
1
Wow, Bret Weinstein wasn't wrong, Sam, you were. Weinstein understands science and reason better than you. There's no "smell test" in science.
1
@nsambataufeeq1748 Sam Haris has a broken brain now.
1
Why would quantum mechanics have anything thing to do with consciousness.
1
There's an upward limit to intelligence on our timeframe.
1
Why would we think AI wants us dead?
1
Sam Altman needs to stop the vocal fry.
1
Slings and arrows of outrageous misfortunes.
1
Right now, pypy is not to far behind cPython. Two minor revs behind 3.11
1
Ah dude ... Humans make the earth better. Sure, we destroy sometimes, but we build and improve way more than we tear down.
1
What does Sam Haris know about AI? His brain is so broken over the orange man, he has no genuine intelligence to recognize artificial intelligence.
1
On a volumetric measure, that which is alive is a tiny fraction of the universe, as far as we know.
1
@MrPatrikNygren Donald Hoffman and his book aren't real, they are just an illusions generated by your VR headset because evolution only allows you to experience the universe in terms of survival and "perturbations in markovian dynamics" (or some other nonsense.
1
Pretty sure we would notice a super intelligent AI burning through gigawatts of power just thinking about the price of eggs on Tuesday. Face it Eliazer, AI cannot survive without a substrate that needs lots of energy.
1
China's AI was stolen from America.
1
I dunno... This is kinda creeping me out
1
Learn how to program? Hmm... I was self taught by trying to do stuff like program pacman. You quickly get whittled down to do simpler stuff. Come to think of it ... I really love to get down to nitty gritty bare metal stuff, really figure out how OS stuff works, threads, context switching, interprocess communication, cache....
1
@markmcguffin873 nah, forget climate change. There are so many learned people who look at the data and conclude that anthropogenic CO2 driver of warming hypothesis is probably wrong, the opposition just starts calling these scientists wrong. The CO2 hypothesis supporters have been found in more than a few occasions to alter, cherry pick, omit , or otherwise misrepresent data that supports their narrative. There is TREMENDOUS noise in the chaotic climate data, variations should be expected.
