It's not really a fair comparison. Capitalism compared to socialism is like comparing apples and oranges. Capitalism just means you own the results of your labor. Capitalism doesn't force you to work for anyone, you are certainly free to be homeless and go hungry. You could be a monk and live in the woods meditating if you want to, perhaps supplicate for food when you're hungry. There's no one there to enforce any amount of generosity from you, so you might starve, but most of the time, people will share if you're nice. There's no one around forcing you to work anywhere.
Socialism is an entire governmental system where that which is good for a society is decided upon by some mechanism, then this greater good is made into law that all citizens are bound to. You're not free to relax, you have to work. Your neighbors are assholes? Tough, you have to work for their benefit. You want to leave? You're not allowed to leave, because you have to work. The mechanism that identified the greater good decides on steel forges but forgets to do any farming? Well, then everyone starves. And that happened under Mao.
