You mean Rust devs making the real devs upset?
33
No. You never maintained a multi language code base. Its awful.
8
@SirLightfire yet most kernels are written in plain C and a smattering of assembly wherever necessary. You're demonstrably wrong.
7
Reasonable conclusion. Kernel should just be written in C. The rust devs can rewrite the kernel in rust if they want.
6
I will have you know, I am quite skilled at transmutation circles. I fail at human souls, there are only trolls around here.
5
Rust and C are completely different cars. You can put a seatbelt and an airbag on a regular car and you would have C with good standards and static analysis. You could also build a car thats made out of Nerf material, has no steering wheel or gear shifter, rather its all controlled by a simple interpretive dance that prevents you from going faster than 15 mph. Then you have rust.
5
If the DMA stuff changes, the rust stuff might break, if this happens, will the rust people notice and fix their drivers? Will the rust people try to veto breaking changes to DMA or whatever in the future?
5
@kirglow4639 The C folks work fine by themselves and created the Linux kernel without Rust. They have demonstrated working together for a long time. It seems to me like some newbies came in and tried to tell them we all have to do something new or their shit will break.
4
You mean A-Loo-ah-ing thing. Hmmmm. That was way funnier in my head.
3
@ForeverZer0 it's actually an inappropriate metaphor, but I agree with you. Rust is the car made of the same material as nerf footballs and it's not driven with foot pedals and steering wheel. Rather, it's driven with interpretive dance colloquially called "the borrow checker."
3
@Linuxdirk people who call out laziness and incompetence are often times projecting their own laziness and incompetence.
3
@rj7250a correct. In embedded real time, we avoid dynamic allocation wherever possible. It's not absurd to set up an array that stupid huge like 4k or such....
3
Yup. QEMU FTW
2
SeL4 says... Hold my beer.
2
YES. SCREW RUST.
2
It's a great game. It's even better after you win and load up krastorio and space exploration
2
Rust is dumb
2
Yeah, then 20 years from now I will try to get C integrated into Redox for "reasons"
2
@seeibe you're not paying attention. The main guys are saying... You don't want a multi language code base. It sucks.
2
We're awesome. We have always been awesome, even before we started using Arch, by the way.
1
Arch is a great distro. I use Arch on various ARM boards...
1
Did you steal that beard off a mentally challenged amish guy? Its aweful.
1
@andreaspatsalides1914 sigh.... Eyes, roll, engage maximum condescending tone... Where is the log file? What does dmesg say? I can't really help you if you can't help yourself... Just read the wiki and stop asking dumb questions on the forum. Sheesh. RTFM, man, RTFM. Oh and go touch some grass... End condescending tone.
1
GNU... I just say Gee En You to make the FSF angry.
1
Pacman is pretty good.
1
ReiserFS. Calling it now. The dude who wrote murdered his wife.
1
FFMPEG? I heard its a mess
1
The worst enemy of a great solution is one that works well enough.
1
Ewe .... Gentoo. Should just learn arch....
1
There's not even an SOW.... Let alone contract....
1
Tedious or difficult? What's the problem statement? Couldn't forks use a different name so the dynamic linker knows better? What about pushing the major version number into the name of the of the shared objects?
1
Flat packs are okay by me. Sounds like a fine way to deal with everything.... Perhaps even statically linked executables too.
1
I'm sorry I'm still trying to understand how you have a YouTube channel with such a grating voice.
1
@andersjjensen there's no escape. C99 for contractual reasons, you should just get a nice static analysis program
1
@SirLightfire the government will decide something eventually, no matter what.
1
I am still confused why windows requires curl in their operating system...
1
Depends.
1
Did they HAVE electricity in the 60s and 70s? Yes. Did it work? Yes. Therefore, I claim electricity was all figured out then. You're that GenZ child that thinks they're smarter than everybody else because you have an advanced degree in gender studies. So STFU and respect your elders. You know nothing.
1
Rust sucks. It's just trendy bullshit.
1
@cchutney348 hmm... That's exactly what I would expect a disturbed meme to say. Hold my beer.
1
@GabrielGabeRodriguez all C code is Holy, blasphemer!
1
@cchutney348 is your idea a "meme", perhaps?
1
Which compiler? GCC? I would imagine a bit of overhead to enforce memory safety...
1
Yeah, just merge and push to master... Or main... Or whatever.
1
Does code biodegrade? Does ut rust? Does the code compile?
1
Sure. Anything possible...
1
Agreed. I think there should be a bug fix release for each major release... I think that's really v1 and v3 for openssl, not sure what happened to v2..
1
Wow dude... You got a face perfect for radio, but your voice is perfect for print. Get a new job, man, you're terrible.
1
The factory must grow.
