When I was 10 or so... my little sister and I got paid unexpectedly by our neighbor for helping out with lawn work... crisp 20 dollar bills, I felt like I was as rich as a king. my little sister lost her twenty dollar bill. I still had mine and accused me of stealing hers... I was interrogated by my parents for hours and hours about the theft untill I figured out that it would just be better to give up my 20 so we could all move on...

  13. Things sucked 100 years ago. You would still die from tuberculosis, also known as "consumption". Also, local anesthetic novocaine wasn't discovered until 1905. Did not become widely available everywhere for several years.

  15. I always point out the obvious problems with Marxism... Scalability. Marxism and "public" ownership of the "means of production" works well on small scales, like perhaps a large local family or a small village. I would also mix in a terrible threat to the members of that group where unity is necessary or they shall perish. Nature and the elements used to be that terrible threat, but modern technology solved that. We just now deal with ourselves our own worst enemies.

  17. Oh... Well, I was right. Odysseus sent a few men to check out some natives after finding land after ten days at sea during stormy weather. The crew needed fresh water; they wanted to make sure the natives were not going to attack them.. a few of the men he sent were given lotus fruit, which made them not really care about their duties. They had to be dragged back to their ship...

  20. I live in a lovely area in Wisconsin. The town just south of me is the quintessential small Midwestern city. One main street with city hall a community center, a few gastro pubs, an old flour mill that now hosts a mall of unique local shops... Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Check it out. I live in a slightly smaller city a short bike ride away
