Its the determinism argument that could be an intrinsic part of reality. If we were to know the starting position and velocities of all particles in the universe, any future state could be determined by mechanical law. This makes free will a moot point because you are just a large collection of particles. Quantum mechanics suggests this is not how the universe actually works at least on tiny scales that are relevant to electrochemical reactions. You are correct though, I suspect that free will is not as common as we think. We can't really choose what we believe or what we are interested in consciously. I might say we have the possibility of extremely limited free will at best.

@JoshRobinson Experts in any health related field should first attempt to do no harm. Jillian Michaels once said she was proud to make a grown man work or so hard he vomited. This "expert" has shamed many people that have real medical conditions and many of her "peers" suggested she is not a real trainer, but an actress that performs at being a trainer.

@hotcurryketchup9451 The title literally says that physics would end the free will debate. I think we can all agree it did not actually do that. Best you can really say is we live in a universe that makes extremely limited free will is still a remote possibility. Also, the Easter Bunny could quantum tunnel from an alternate dimension we call the twilight zone

And possibly the only time he was (likely) wrong.

@hotcurryketchup9451 I said nothing of the sort. I have heard enough compelling evidence that free will is an illusion. If free will does exist, its not something created, but probably an emergent property of self-awareness. The quantum probability discussion just is a weak argument to a non deterministic universe.

@Viking102938 you tried to be deep, but missed and just hit stupid. How would you know what the next guy does or does not understand? There are some really brillant people in the world that probably really do understand. You're not one of them.
2
@StarryStarryNocturne you're one of those terds that thinks you're such a damn good person, aren't you? Basically, here's the deal. You're just as guilty of whatever invented mess you think we are in. Here's the truth: Humans were at the mercy if nature for all of history except for maybe the richest nations over the last 50 years or so. We nearly figured out how to really make this planet awesome and share that with everyone, but dooshbags like you gotta run around being all like humans suck and were doomed.

Nuclear is still better.

The thought that you are conscious is not consciousness. It's just a thought.

@jrjrjrjrjrjrjrjrjrjrjrjrjr you are neither continuous or concrete. Your memory really records only the most important bits unless you have one of those photographic memories, but even then you just recall more details than the average person. Memory is not continuous, nor is your access to your memory. You hop and skip over the details your brain has available. Furthermore, something awful might happen to you like getting dumped right before vacation and you cancel you plane ticket. You're super depressed over that loss as your ex flies away on the plane with her new boyfriend. Then a few days later you find out the plane crashed with no survivors. Blamo. You're experience has completely changed and her dumping you just saved your life.

Why do we want to rebuild the world from scratch.

Speeding up mental processes? Slowing down? Present moment? Sure... Whatever.

He is a chucklehead. He is Mr. I invented string theory that never predicted anything dumbass.
1
@hotcurryketchup9451 Exactly. Free will is likely really rare. I am not sure if I have it everyday.
1
@hotcurryketchup9451 yes, agree, however there is a difference between predetermined and deterministic, which is what the context is. The evidence we have suggests that our universe is nondeterministic. If it were deterministic, free will would likely be just an illusion. I think it probably is an illusion, but a very convincing one.

@godsrevolver9737 With our current understanding of quantum mechanics, behavior of subatomic particles behave in ways that cannot be classically predetermined. Results of the quantum mechanical "wave function" yield a probability density of where a particle might actually be. The actual position is not known and cannot be determined until a measurement is taken. This nondetermic interpretation seems to explain many empiracle observations. Many technologies are based on these QM equations such as nuclear reactors, radiological medicine, and even flash memory devices to name a few. Its entirely possible that the probabalistic interpretation is only a shadow of some deeper deterministic truth, but its the best we've got. If a better theory that is deterministic comes along, well if that shoe fits, I'll change my mind.

@godsrevolver9737 ah too bad. I am a philosophical zombie. I act in every conceivable way to appear that I have what you call conscienceness, but I am no more conscience than a rock struck by lightning.
1
@haley-and_gaming6371 I am not missing any points, I understand exactly what is meant by a deterministic system. Being said, a nondeterministic universe only gives free will as a possibility, certainly not a gaurauntee. I think its a good idea to ACT as if you have free will, take responsibility for your life and seek to respond well to adversity. I just know that free will is somewhat limited if it does exist.
1
@godsrevolver9737 I never said consciousness demonstrated anything about determinism. You could be quite conscious of a completely hopeless doomed existance that you have no control over.... wait, that sounds like our universe... damn it!
1
@InanisNihil irrelevant, knowing or computing the result isn't necessary. Any fundamental determinism makes free will impossible. Fortunately, we likely live in a non deterministic universe, as far as we really understand right now.

I don't feel doomed because there's no doom coming. This is garbage science.
1
@StarryStarryNocturne blah blah blah. You ARE one of those terds who thinks you're so much better than anyone else?
1
What would this quack know about brains outside of what he read the night before this interview?
1
Dr. Liberal asked some kids about how they feel about some documentaries and did some brain scans. This is just Stoopid.

Meh... of course the creator is going to say that the predecessor is obsolete.

Some ideas are just bad, like this one. Mostly, it sounds like a bunch of big words that grasp at making her sound credible. I do not believe Michaels is a qualified nutritionist or actually aware of what the research indicates. She makes a vague suggestion that ketosis increases oxidative stress on the body, but there's no study to back this up. Actually, to the contrary, I found several studies indicating a link between ketogenic diets and a reduction of markers associated with oxidative stress. Good scientist always cite their sources! https://goo.gl/cPz8zZ

The experiment she described sounded pretty dumb.
