6 billion years ago there were natural reactors that formed at Oklo, and the decay products, with zero containment, are still there in the original site, and are being mined for the Uranium. About the worst area you can think of for a waste depository, sandstone, with water flowing through it, and still thousands of tons of those decay products are still there.

Yes, saw the original on the largest screen in Africa, like Star Wars 2 years before. It was terrifying, and amazing at the same time. I wanted one.......

The problem is that you have really not used all the energy in the fuel, you can reprocess it, get another few dozen cycles out of it, and in the end land up with a few hundred tons of really radioactive, but short lived, stuff. Then drill or dig a deep hole in stable rock, and leave it there for 200 years, to decay to less harmful isotopes. Drill down 4km in a subduction zone and it will be easily disposed of in the mantle, and come up again in 50 million years as ore.

Lower energy to not slingshot it out, just if you were going to do it lunar disposal would work just as well. Plant it on the lunar surface, and leave it there is a spot. No need for great accuracy either, within 100km is fine.

@my3dviews Yes, but store it on the far side........

@LWT80 Yes but the one that was discovered because the mine isotope ratios started to change drastically, and at first they thought somebody was stealing the ore, then looked, and saw the remains of the natural reactors in the ground composition. Stopped 2 billion years ago, when the amount of U235 had decayed so that the concentration could not go critical, who knows how long it has operated though, and the core of the planet gets most of it's heat, and all the helium we use, as a result of being one massive nuclear fission reactor.
