Do not forget that the cotton used to make those pads was originally developed as a field dressing for WWII, and included in the battlefield medical kits for the US military. After the war it was repurposed, and even the modern military still uses those same supplies for battlefield dressings, albeit with a form that allows it to be bandaged in place, and with different shape. A lot of the more practised combat troops carry with them both the sanitary pads, the tampons and lots of condoms, as those are very useful in a lot of cases as well, along with many also taking along adult diapers as well, as they also allow for less irritation in the field.
