  3. And the people of Belarus were only sympathetic to Russia because the generous Soviet-era welfare state continued there, and Russia was paying for it! (Sort of like how Cuba during the Cold War was sustained by enormous Soviet subsidies, and collapsed into wretched poverty as soon as the USSR fell.)

  4. That's not a Ukrainian symbol though: if they'd wanted something more aggressive than the regular tryzub they'd more likely have gone for the "sword" version of the tryzub that the OUN (and later Right Sector) used as its emblem.

  5.  @PatriciaSantos-qt9lw  It's interesting that the behaviour of the European invaders of America (subjugation in Mexico and Peru, genocide in the United States and Canada) more-or-less mirrors what victorious native nations did to their defeated enemies in the same lands. The Aztecs and the Inca conquered their neighbours to build empires, while North American Indian tribes were generally expelled or wiped out if defeated by rival tribes.

Aileen Getty isn't a big company but an individual, and one wealthy enough that she'll be able to afford oil-derived products no matter how much their price skyrockets due to cuts in oil production.
