Since fuel costs are less than 5% of the cost of nuclear energy (compare with 60% for coal or 85% for gas) it doesn't make sense to add unreliable wind and solar power to a nuclear-dominated grid. It makes a lot more sense on a gas-dominated grid, which is why the wind and gas industries are best buddies. On a practical post-fossil-fuel grid there will probably be only two major types of energy: nuclear and hydroelectric.

  5. More likely Germany will become an object lesson in what will happen if you try to do without nuclear power. Wind and solar are just a smokescreen, a ruse to obscure an ever-increasing dependence on Russian natural gas.

Japan needs nuclear power because it has almost no fossil fuel resources of its own -- in the era before nuclear power, that lack impelled them to invade first Manchuria (for coal) and then Indonesia (for oil).
