  3. Crimea was the Sudetenland of the 21st century, in that it was a territory of the victim state where the aggressor's ethnicity was a majority of the population. If Ukraine wins this war, how likely is it that it will feel compelled to ethnically cleanse Crimea of Russians, just as restored Czechoslovakia passed the Beneš decrees to rid itself of the Sudeten Germans?

My guess is that they see the Russian petrostate as a defender of their fossil-fuelled lifestyles against the environmentalists.

  27.  @Chrisace89  Europe is poorer in natural resources than the US, in part because it is more densely populated and has been industrialized for longer. Germany was Europe's industrial powerhouse, but after 2000 it became very dependent on Russian natural gas, because of a very powerful anti-nuclear-energy movement, plus the fact that pipeline gas is always cheaper than LNG delivered by ship.

Probably because the Constitution of the United States (and for that matter, the constitutions of most republics in the Americas) pre-dates parliamentary democracy as we know it today.

  34.  @daneaxe6465  Actually the first capital of Rus wasn't Kyiv but Novgorod, which later on became the capital of an independent republic (which sadly ultimately fell to Moscow). So to me it looks like the problem isn't with (Great) Russians as an ethnicity, but rather with Moscow in particular. Moscow rose to prominence as a brutal kleptocracy serving its Mongol overlords, and likely retained this kleptocratic character even after throwing off the Mongol yoke: it reminds me of how many African lands went from being brutally exploited by white European colonialists, to being brutally exploited by local black kleptocrats (with Mobutu perhaps being one of the most infamous examples of such).

The Russians call Ukrainians Nazis because since the Maidan they've increasingly adopted symbolism associated with Stepan Bandera's Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists: examples being the now-familiar "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes" call-and-response, and the Ukrainian military's adoption of the OUN anthem "We were born in a great hour". What they overlook is that while Bandera collaborated with the Nazis until the Nazis double-crossed him, so did Stalin. And Stalin (leading a powerful state instead of a relatively powerless insurgent movement) had rather less excuse to do so.

Strongly disagree with the "worse than ISIS" claim re Russia: if ISIS had had nuclear weapons they wouldn't have just threatened to use them as Russia is doing, they would have actually used them. Russia's evil ambitions are entirely this-worldly (indeed, they pretty much turned the Russian Orthodox Church into an arm of the state), while ISIS was an apocalyptic death cult seeking to bring about the end of the world. Their propaganda magazine was named "Dabiq" after a location that plays a similar role in Islamic eschatology to that played by "Armageddon" in Christian eschatology. And back in 2008 this end-of-the-world fixation among those who would later become ISIS prompted an Iraqi member of al-Qaeda to approach Osama bin Laden to warn him that "the group was being led by millennarians who were talking all the time about the Mahdi and making strategic decisions based on when they thought the Mahdi was going to arrive". This actually sent in motion the schism between ISIS and al-Qaeda.
