@ak5659 Oil and gas.

@maxpower3990 One thing that really helped the Nazis was Hjalmar Schacht's financial chicanery that allowed them to keep much of their re-armament expenditure off the books, for example with the "MEFO bills" scheme.

The last one should be spelled "Ceaușescu".

@Joshwaheazo Housing in the UK is so expensive mainly because of massive NIMBYism enabled by the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act, which requires local government to approve every development on a case-by-case basis. In addition local governments have only minimal tax-raising powers, meaning that it's not in their interest for local population to increase.

@grahamstrouse1165 I wonder if Russia's low life expectancy is actually an advantage of them, as it eans they don't have millions of dementia-addled elderly sucking up resources and manpower for their care?

@awuma Russia wouldn't be able to keep a re-armament drive secret as Hitler (living in an age before spy satellites) did. Its main advantage today is likely its relatively low life expectancy, as the biggest item of public expenditure now for most Western governments is entitlements for old people (in the US that would be Social Security and Medicare). This age-related expenditure put extreme pressure on Western governments (likely starting with the Germans, because their Baby Boom was pre-WWII thanks to Hitler) to cut other areas of spending, such as factories making artillery shells for example.

The real problem is that the Arsenal of Democracy no longer exists: shut down to save money when national budgets were being strained by the ever rising elderly population (pensions, health care, and nursing homes for dementia sufferers). The pathetic state of the Bundeswehr today is often blamed on an anti-patriotic attitude in Germany stemming from WWII guilt, but that's clearly wrong as the Bundeswehr was pretty decent during the Cold War. It fell to pieces after reunification, perhaps because (thanks to Hitler) Germany's Baby Boom was before WWII, meaning the bill for all those retirees came earlier than in other Western countries.

I'd say more "it's about the car culture, baby".

Actually "rasputitsa" literally means "time without roads". The equivalent Ukrainian term for mud season is "bezdorizhzhia" (бездорі́жжя).

@itskyansaro Actually no: the point of a higher octane rating is to allow the use of a higher compression ratio, which makes for a more efficient engine.

@scottsthaname1 Aren't some progressive Democrats blocking the bill too, in their case mostly because it also includes support for Israel?

@gianmarcobuzzotti4517 I wonder if it would be a good or a bad idea if Ukraine paid hitmen to kill Trump and other MAGA Republicans?
1
Trump supporters believe America's real enemies are the asylum seekers flooding across the Mexican border.

@AstroGremlinAmerican Which is why I regard Herr Atomausstieg Gerhard Schröder as one of modern Europe's worst traitors.

@zetaanarchics7113 Unfortunately electric cars are either far more expensive or made in China.

@fishcane1 As America becomes more secular the abortion issue is becoming less and less important: it has now largely been replaced (as an animating issue of the right) by anti-immigration.
1
@badgerpa9 The issue is more that most Western countries have now run down their stockpiles and don't have much capacity to make more weapons and ammo, as so many of the factories were closed down to save money during the 1990s.
