@JakeBroe Especially as Mariupol is likely embittered enough at Russia that the threat of a Ukrainian suicide bomber (most likely someone who lost their family at Russian hands) is appreciably non-zero.

Interesting that China claims Sakhalin as theirs: if they were to take back that island wouldn't the Japanese be shitting bricks about the possibility (if China takes Taiwan too) of being practically encircled? Or do you think that in that scenario the West would give Japan a green light to reclaim Karafuto (to use the Japanese name for the island)?

Another argument for why it's unlikely that the real Putin visited Mariupol, is that surely it's a place where enough people have been embittered enough by Russia did to the city (and who possibly lost their family and thus have nothing left to lose) that becoming a suicide bomber may look like an attractive option? After all, one of the first victims of suicide bombing was Russian Tsar Alexander II, back in 1881.

Would the latter scenario be like how Piedmont in the 19th century gave up Savoy and Nice to France in exchange for military assistance against Austria (which they'd use to set in motion the ultimate unification of Italy)?
